About Outreach

Outreach@Barnstorm aims to provide opportunities to people in Kilkenny and the South East in the area of theatre and drama and its uses within a community context.  Theatre and drama methods can offer new ways of looking at a variety of themes or topics.  They are flexible tools that can be used to celebrate, explore and question our communities and worlds.  They are used in informal and formal education, personal and social development and , of course, in the creation of artistic endeavours.  By their very nature, drama and theatre draw people together which make them particularly useful in communitites.

Outreach@Barnstorm currently hosts three programmes of work:

Youth Drama Programme

The Youth Drama Programme is currently made up of two youth theatre groups catering for 10-12 years and 13-18 years, and a summer theatre programme for children and young people.  From September 2010 there will be three youth theatre groups, 10-12, 12-14 and 14-18.  The youth theatre runs concurrently with the school year.

Adult Drama Programme

The Adult Drama Programme is currently made up of the Adult Drama Club which runs weekly and the Barn Owl Players which produces, directs and performs its own production with the support and resources of Barnstorm.

Outreach Development Programme

The Outreach Development Programme is a flexible strand that welcomes individuals, organisations and communities to get in touch and discuss possibilities of working with Outreach@Barnstorm on realising theatre, arts and drama projects.  Activities in thepast have ranged from programmes in schools, community theatre, partnerships with local agencies and artists and providing advice, support and resources to those that wish to use drama in their own work.

If you are interested in hearing more, participating in any of the above programmes or think Outreach can be of assistance to you or your community please contact our Outreach Officer at anna@barnstorm.ie  or on (056) 7751266

Adult Drama Club

Theatre Training

Barnstorm Theatre Company launched the Adult Drama Club in October 2007 to provide local people the unique chance to explore, investigate and create theatre. With the resources of Kilkenny’s professional theatre company behind the club, this really is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant and dynamic programme of both training and performances, as well as theatre visits and reviews, new writing and more. The idea for the club came about through strong demand from the public. Barnstorm asked previous training participants about their areas of interest and received a tremendous response. It became clear that a regular theatre space dedicated to giving local people the opportunity to debate and create theatre, increase their theatre skills and meet new faces, was really needed in Kilkenny.

ADC 1 became the Barn Owl Players and produced its first full-length play in the Watergate Theatre in December 2008. BOP meets every Thursday night from 7.30-9.30pm.

A new Adult Drama Club (ADC 2) was launched in Sept 08 meeting each Mon 7.30 - 9.30. In April 2010, and after 18 months involved in all aspects of theatre making and producing Shorts and Anything But Peig... the members of ADC2 have merged with the Barn Owl Players.

There will be a new Adult Drama Club in September 2010

Coming next:

Barn Owl Players present their first One-Act Festival of Theatre from 14th - 15th and 17th - 18th June in The Barn.
